A large language model predicts plausible phrasing based on patterns in data and the context it was given. In practice, this means AI can sound coherent while repeatedly making poor editorial decisions. For example, it struggles to separate core ideas from secondary ones, track repetition, and verify whether a conclusion is supported by real facts.
Simply put, LLMs are much better at generating texts than judging them.
While this might be enough for speeding up the production of purely informational genres like news stories, reports, or commentary, deeper journalistic or PR materials require a grounded perspective. A human writer brings worldview, critical thinking, an attitude to the subject, and even their own character. And it works because a unique voice or angle is often the reason content captures attention in flooded news or social feeds.
Still, ignoring AI is like ignoring the internet because it constitutes a permanent shift in how content specialists increase their efficiency and capabilities across industries. In that regard, one should think of LLMs as a diligent, hard-working junior who will do exactly what you ask. But they aren’t immune to making mistakes because they can’t weigh relevance like a professional editor, protect meaning like an experienced writer, or test claims like a rigorous fact-checker.
Below are typical AI failures human creators need to catch when running quality control. From thin word choices and clichés to invented proofs and disrupted storytelling, all make the draft less readable and less pleasant to go through.
The use of stock introductory and transition phrases like “in today’s fast-paced world,” “furthermore,” and “the bottom line is” doesn’t amplify meaning. Most of the time, it reminds the reader they are moving through a formula. In listicles, this becomes even more obvious with these “next on our list” or “last but not least.”
Develop an eye on the most widespread banalities and cut any from that archive. If the connection between two points is clear, it usually does not need a filler phrase announcing itself.
Instead of moving the thought forward, LLM tends to restate what the reader has already understood. That makes the text longer, flatter, and less intelligent. AI doesn’t know which points actually need explanation. For example, this one doesn’t need any:
“Private communities are more controlled environments. This means they can be managed more directly.”
Sometimes overexplanation literally comes down to just rephasing:
“These signals accumulate over time and form a narrative. This means that over time, people begin to see a pattern.”
LLMs often make the same idea more than once because they can't reliably choose the strongest version and stop there. Instead, they keep nearby interpretations of the same thought and leave them either sitting next to each other, or spread all along the content.
It creates two problems at once:
Ask yourself one hard editorial question: “If I delete this sentence, what do I lose?” If the answer is “not much,” the removal is a natural next step. The same logic applies at a larger scale. If an entire paragraph or section doesn’t contribute to the meaning of the piece, it shouldn’t be there.
The common marker is “smart” vocabulary where a simpler word would work better: “utilize” instead of “use”, “leverage” instead of “benefit from,” “commence” instead of “start.”
This kind of wording usually makes the text overly academic and less readable. In many cases, it also creates the impression that the author is trying to sound more expert than they really are.
If a simpler word keeps the meaning intact, opt for it. More complex vocabulary only helps when it adds precision, aligns with a scientific style, or makes sense for professional communities.
AI defaults to passive voice where active voice would be more direct, more energetic, and easier to read. Example: “The decision was made to revise the messaging strategy” instead of “The team revised the messaging strategy.”
If the actor matters, name them and rewrite the sentence in an active voice.
A red flag in AI-written copy is this artificial contrast: “it’s not just X, it’s Y”, which makes the line heavier and more dramatic than it needs to be.

It’s always useful to pause and check: is there an opposing point here, or is the model inventing one for the sake of tension?
When a section that should read like normal narrative suddenly breaks into chopped-up slogan lines, that is very likely another AI cliché. “No fluff. No filler. Just facts.” sounds sharp, but that style is far from suitable for every genre.
Content creators use bite-sized sentences as a figure of speech. But if the whole paragraph. Absolutely the whole paragraph. With no variation at all. Is written like that. It stops helping readability and starts poking the reader along the way.
In most cases, people default to the punctuation that is easiest to type. Articles written manually on a standard keyboard (unless they belong to a more specialized format) are rarely full of marks like the em dash or angled quotes.
This kind of punctuation can quickly make LLM-driven content feel robotically sterile, as the rhythm and visual texture look too designed.
Decide in advance which punctuation marks belong to your style and state that in the prompt.
AI doesn’t think in terms of a complete structure. It generates text sequentially, which is why separate sections end up loosely connected rather than forming a natural progression of thought.
This shows up in two ways:
The overall order of sections is accidental. It reflects how the material was fed into the model, not how the argument should unfold. This becomes especially visible when working with transcripts because AI tends to preserve the original flow of speech, even when it doesn’t translate into a coherent written structure.
The editorial task is not to “add transitions,” but to rebuild the structure itself: shape both the sequence of ideas and the boundaries between them so the copy reads as a continuous line of reasoning.
Are interviews your daily routine? Well, the bad news is that LLMs have a visible problem when asked to turn raw input from an interviewee into a well-aligned combo of indirect speech and quotes. They tend to repeat the same point in both cases, instead of using direct speech to add detail, specificity, or a stronger voice to what was already outlined by the interviewer.
LLMs also invent or rewrite quotes. In interview-based pieces, they may treat a request for “third-person interpretation” as permission to rework direct speech rather than frame it properly. As a result, a quote can move too far from what the speaker said.
A separate complication appears when the direct speech and the generated output are in different languages. In that case, AI may even alter the original meaning.
The safest approach is to treat quotes as high-risk elements. If AI is helping with translation, the original should stay visible during review, and the final version should be checked against it line by line.
AI often ends vaguely, letting the text fade out. This usually happens because the model keeps aiming for a smooth closing line rather than a firm final thought.
A strong ending should do at least one of three things:
A classic LLM-generated draft is full of vague and noncommittal phrasing, even where the raw material supports a firmer statement. Instead of making a clear point, it defaults to hedging language like “can be seen as” or “may suggest,” avoiding a direct answer.
This creates two problems:
A good editorial habit here is to check if the topic gives you enough space to speak confidently.
AI can imitate brevity and simplicity quite well. But that same tendency can also produce syntax poverty. The thought stays mechanically phrased, so the wording does too. That is why LLM-generated articles so often rely on repeated vocabulary and sentence logic.
A human writer can do more than keep things clear. They can reach for more specific word choices, use sharper analogies, bring in idioms, vary sentence length, and make the prose feel intentional rather than assembled.
If the text keeps solving every line through the same plain verb, the same sentence shape, or the same low-risk phrasing, it probably needs a more deliberate rewrite. And, of course, Ctrl+F your draft and look for the core word repeating in a short span.
AI-written content usually misses local conventions. A vivid illustration is the British–American split. The Oxford comma is standard in American English but much less natural in British English and mostly inappropriate for journalistic copy.
The same issue shows up in spelling and idioms.
Specify the language variant and style upfront, try adding a reference text, and list the rules. Then check in edit all the details where LLMs may slide back into a safer, more generic middle.
At the current stage of LLM development, no prompt can fully reproduce the tonal sensitivity, judgment, and emotional nuance of a human writer.
As mentioned before, informational genres can survive with very little interpretation, which is one reason they are increasingly automated. But features, op-eds, analysis, and personal brand content rarely hold attention for long without live perspective or a distinctive tone of voice.
AI doesn’t sense what deserves emphasis, where tension should build, what should sound restrained, and where the text needs warmth, edge, or personality. That makes generated drafts clean, logical, grammatically correct – and still stiff.
So this part, at least for now, is solely the human creator’s responsibility.
If you understand the kinds of mistakes your AI writing intern is likely to make, know exactly what to check in its work and what kind of feedback to give, it will keep adapting and producing better results.
But even trained human writers still make mistakes sometimes, so a responsible author should always stay alert. Especially when it feels like you have already given the LLM absolutely everything it needs to produce a perfect copy.
